Lobophyllia

Lobophyllia corals, also known as lobed brain corals or lobo corals, are large polyp stony (LPS) corals found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in the Great Barrier Reef. These striking corals come in a wide variety of vibrant colors, including greens, blues, reds, and oranges, making them popular additions to reef aquariums.

Care requirements:

Lighting: Lobophyllia prefer moderate lighting, around 150-200 PAR. LED or T5 bulbs work well, but it's important to acclimate them gradually to prevent stress.

Water flow: Low to moderate water flow is ideal. Aim for just enough flow to carry away waste without causing the coral to retract.

Water parameters:

    •    Temperature: 75-80°F (24-27°C)

    •    pH: 8.1-8.4

    •    Salinity: 1.025 specific gravity

    •    Calcium: 400-450 ppm

    •    Alkalinity: 8-9 dKH

    •    Nitrate: 5-10 ppm

    •    Phosphate: 0.05-0.1 ppm

Feeding: While Lobophyllia obtain nutrients through their symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae algae, they benefit from occasional target feeding with meaty foods like brine or mysis shrimp.

Placement: Provide adequate space between Lobophyllia and other corals, as they can be aggressive at night with sweeper tentacles. Aim for 4-5 inches of separation.

Maintenance: Regular water testing and changes are crucial. Monitor for signs of stress or disease, and address issues promptly.

Lobophyllia corals are moderately difficult to care for, making them suitable for intermediate to advanced reef aquarists. With proper care, these captivating corals can thrive and become stunning centerpieces in reef tanks.
